Soil Abiotic Properties Shape Plant Functional Diversity Across Temperate Grassland Plant Communities

چکیده
There is increasing awareness that plant community functional properties can be an important driver of ecosystem functioning. However, major knowledge gaps exist about how environmental factors, especially climate and soil abiotic properties, shape diversity at a regional scale. Furthermore, those scales the relationships between taxonomic have rarely been considered. Here, we used large database species trait data from 180 temperate grasslands across England, covering broad range grassland types, climatic conditions management intensities, last having strong influence on multiple variables. Our specific aims were to: (1) identify dominant factors explaining variation in different facets including weighted means (CWMs) traits various multi-trait indices; (2) test whether relationship mediated by We found (pH nutrient stocks), but not climate, main scale, with significant contribution stoichiometry (N/P ratio). Two indices namely CWMs leaf area relative growth rate, explained interactions pH N mean annual precipitation, N/P ratio. These also negatively related to under certain conditions, specifically high clay content, N/P. Together, our results indicate rather than communities They suggest play role shaping patterns properties. findings are importance for design interpretation future studies using measures as proxies services scales.

Biotic and Abiotic Properties Mediating Plant Diversity Effects on Soil Microbial Communities in an Experimental Grassland
Plant diversity drives changes in the soil microbial community which may result in alterations in ecosystem functions. However, the governing factors between the composition of soil microbial communities and plant diversity are not well understood. We investigated the impact of plant diversity (plant species richness and functional group richness) and plant functional group identity on soil mic...
متن کاملEffects of Plant Diversity, Functional Group Composition, and Fertilization on Soil Microbial Properties in Experimental Grassland
BACKGROUND Loss of biodiversity and increased nutrient inputs are two of the most crucial anthropogenic factors driving ecosystem change. Although both received considerable attention in previous studies, information on their interactive effects on ecosystem functioning is scarce. In particular, little is known on how soil biota and their functions are affected by combined changes in plant dive...
متن کاملAbiotic Soil Factors and Plant-parasitic Nematode Communities.
A natural community of plant-parasitic nematodes is usually polyspecific. The host plant is the most important driving force in nematode populations, but abiotic factors are important in maintaining the steady state. Nematode communities often separate by abiotic soil factors. In any continuous habitat, including crop plants, generally there is a consistency of the most abundant species, which ...
متن کاملInorganic soil nitrogen under grassland plant communities of different species composition and diversity
We measured aboveground plant biomass and soil inorganic nitrogen pools in a biodiversity experiment in northern Sweden, with plant species richness ranging from 1 to 12 species. In general, biomass increased and nitrate pools decreased with increasing species richness. Transgressive overyielding of mixed plant communities compared to the most productive of the corresponding monocultures occurr...
متن کاملChanges in Plant Species Richness Induce Functional Shifts in Soil Nematode Communities in Experimental Grassland
BACKGROUND Changes in plant diversity may induce distinct changes in soil food web structure and accompanying soil feedbacks to plants. However, knowledge of the long-term consequences of plant community simplification for soil animal food webs and functioning is scarce. Nematodes, the most abundant and diverse soil Metazoa, represent the complexity of soil food webs as they comprise all major ...
